Ian Frazier is a master of both distilled insight and utter nonsense. His nonfiction books are grandly scaled, immersive examinations of how place, populace, and history create each other. But for all his impeccable reportage credentials—including two decades as a staff writer for the New Yorker —Frazier is also brilliantly, bizarrely funny. His brief, almost miniature comic pieces tend to contain few, if any, jokes; the humor arises from the carefully overwrought language, and the fact that they were written at all.
In the collection Dating Your Mom , the long-distance phone calls of Igor Stravinsky are critiqued as if they were newly discovered sonatas. In Coyote V.

Later, during the question-and-answer session, Doyle was more circumspect but no less definitive. Ian Frazier is perhaps best known as a humor writer, with his books “Dating Your Mom” and “Coyote vs. Acme” serving as his calling cards. But Frazier has always balanced his funny material, much of which has appeared in The New Yorker, with serious nonfiction, much of it pursued with the ardor of a relentlessly curious mind and, increasingly in recent years, a passion for social justice. In his new collection, “Hogs Wild: Selected Reporting Pieces,” the author is in largely serious mode, rooting out the causes and effects of homelessness and poverty in New York and elsewhere, investigating the heroin epidemic on Staten Island, and elegizing a suicide.
But even in these sobering, often achingly sad pieces, he operates with a light hand, often finding small rays of light piercing the darkness. And occasionally he reverts to full-on laugh-out-loud mode, as in the title essay, in which, among other things, he debunks the myth of Hogzilla. Printers Row recently caught up with Frazier, 65, for a phone interview from his home in Montauk, N.
