I was rooting for the second date. I really wanted it to be fun. On paper, this new guy and I had a standout first go-round: plenty to talk about, lots of shared laughs. We commiserated about Trump and he boasted about being raised by a throng of strong women. He even planned our second date halfway through, picking up tickets for a film we both wanted to see. But he’d also tried to kiss me goodnight after I’d pulled away and then lingered on my stoop, asking if I was sure he couldn’t come up. As our movie date approached, I felt a squeeze of something unpleasant whenever I pictured his handsome face. Still, I pushed it aside, because lord knows enough people have told me I’m too picky: 31 and single and expecting the moon and stars.

According to the survey, singletons today feel the weight of expectation on their shoulders, with 65 per cent of those polled saying they felt under pressure from family and friends to find ‘the one’.

Skip navigation! I used to look at dating in New York as a pure numbers game. I figured that the more men I met up with for drinks, the sooner I’d find myself in a relationship. So I said yes to everyone, and stacked my calendars full of drink dates, walking dates, coffee dates, and dinner dates.
Social media has made dating more of a minefield than ever. Consider yourself lucky you haven’t crossed online paths with these terrible men. By Anna Davies.
I went on a date with a girl who I met through work. I picked her up from her house and we drove into her local town. We had a nice meal and were getting on great. After dinner she suggested a few bars so I could see what her town had to offer. I offered to drive her home but she said her brother was outside to pick her up. Due to our bar crawl I had no idea how to get back to where my car was parked. I ended up walking around town for hours looking for my car and eventually got home at 10am.
I went on a date with a man I met online, who seemed fun and interesting. We met in a city-centre bar on a weeknight for drinks. The whole date — which lasted exactly two hours — he kept checking his watch. As we talked I felt like I was in a particularly harrowing job interview. It quickly became apparent that I was not ticking all the required boxes.
I remember the temptation to make a run for it while this rather arrogant man visited the loo. But I remained out of courtesy and vague amusement.
